During my first summer job that involved writing code for a Unix system, I ran into a stumbling block in the form of a memory management problem that insisted on dumping core on me. Being (at the time) a strict adherent to the printf() school of debugging, I began to isolate critical sections of the code in an attempt to find the pointer overrun. Frustrated, I compiled a greatly function-reduced version of the code and called it test. Typing test at the command line prompt returned no error; adding some more printf() debug lines also yielded no error, but no output either. I was stymied and began to distrust my compiler options and filesystem search path. The problem, of course, is that the shell has a built-in function called test, and if you execute it on the command line, you get back either 0 or 1, not printf() output. Using ./test to explicitly call my code snippet worked, and eventually led me down the path of finding my root cause sloppiness. Lesson learned: Know what it is you re testing, including everything in the application linkage and execution path from code to libraries to configuration files.
